Herbal CSA – Seasonal Health Kits

What is an Herbal CSA?
In recent years, food CSAs have become very popular across the country. CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. This is an agreement that is made before harvest time between the farmer and consumer to purchase a set amount of produce. It is a win-win situation as the farmer has a ready market for what is grown and the consumer has a dependable supply of quality produce.

Herbal CSAAn Herbal CSA is similar. The main difference is the herbalist (me) provides herbal products to the consumer (you). In this context CSA refers to Community Supported Apothecary.

More important than the label are the quality and relevance of the products offered. All herbal creations are handmade in small batches and reflect the theme of our school: using healing plants that are simple, practical, safe and effective.

Why Seasonal CSAs?
The external environment has a strong influence on our health as we go through each cycle around the sun. The seasonal tendencies of dampness, dryness, wind, heat and cold are reflected in our internal environment and can create health problems if too extreme. This concept is fundamental in both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda.

Our Herbal CSA Seasonal Health Kits have been compiled with small batch, handmade products to provide support in staying healthy during the challenges of each of the four seasons. The kits use ingredients and ideas from both Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine plus many herbs local to the American Southwest. Many of these herbal creations have been used in my clinical work over the past 20+ years and are some of my favorite time tested formulations.

The purpose of the kits is to provide you with ready made products that specifically address health challenges common to each season.

  • Autumn Kits emphasize staying grounded and supporting the Nervous System
  • Winter Kits emphasize support of the Immune System during cold & flu season
  • Spring Kits emphasize support for the liver, moving stagnation and supporting the detox process in the body
  • Summer Kits emphasize keeping the body cool and hydrated, supporting a healthy digestion and using adaptogens to provide extra energy during the most active season

Each kit has an article describing what the health challenges for that season and tips on how to overcome those challenges. The seasonal article also describes the contents of the specific Seasonal Health Kit and instructions on how to use the products.
